Why is 3D motion capture used in gait analysis?

Short answer
3D motion capture is used in gait analysis to measure how body segments move through space during walking or running, helping clinicians identify movement patterns that a simple visual assessment may miss.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the assessment can show
Small reflective markers or other tracking tools are placed on selected points of the body. Cameras record their movement while you walk, jog, or perform a task. Software then maps joint motion in three dimensions, allowing the clinician to review angles, timing, step symmetry, pelvic movement, and the path of the feet and knees.
This information adds detail to a hands-on examination and video review. It can help connect a movement pattern with pain, reduced balance, weakness, a previous injury, or difficulty using a prosthesis or orthosis. The result is a measurement-based picture of movement, not a diagnosis on its own; your symptoms, examination, medical history, and other tests still matter.
How to prepare and take part
Wear comfortable clothing that allows the clinician to see and place markers around the legs and trunk, along with the footwear you normally use for the activity being assessed. Tell the team about pain, recent surgery, falls, walking aids, braces, or changes in your usual walking pattern.
During the session, follow the requested pace and repeat the movement naturally. You may be asked to walk several passes so the team can compare comfortable movement with a specific task. Speak up if pain increases, you feel unsteady, or you need a rest. Ask how the findings will change your exercise plan, footwear advice, brace settings, or follow-up.
When to seek care
Arrange a clinical assessment if a new or worsening change in walking is affecting daily activities, if pain persists, or if you are repeatedly losing balance. Seek urgent medical help for sudden inability to walk, new one-sided weakness or numbness, a serious injury with severe pain or deformity, or loss of bladder or bowel control with back or leg symptoms.
A gait analysis appointment is not a substitute for urgent care when these warning signs are present. A clinician can decide whether motion capture is appropriate after checking your strength, sensation, joints, and walking safety.
Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist
Ask: What movement are you assessing? Could my pain or weakness affect the results? Should I bring my usual shoes, brace, or walking aid? Which findings will guide treatment? Will I receive a written explanation or exercise plan?

Questions people ask
Does 3D motion capture diagnose the cause of pain?
No. It describes movement patterns and may help guide clinical reasoning, but a diagnosis also requires your symptoms, examination, and relevant medical tests.
Can I wear my usual brace or walking aid during gait analysis?
Usually, you should bring and mention any brace or walking aid you normally use. The clinician may assess movement with and without it when that is safe and relevant.
What should I wear for the assessment?
Choose comfortable clothing that permits marker placement and bring the footwear you use for walking or running.
