Why is 3D foot scanner used in custom orthotics?

The scanner creates a digital representation of the foot surface and can show differences between the feet. This information may help a clinician consider arch shape, pressure-sensitive areas, and how an insert should contact the foot. The scan is one part of planning: walking pattern, symptoms, footwear, joint movement, strength, and activity demands also influence the prescription.

A digital image does not automatically identify the source of foot or leg pain. Its value comes from combining the captured shape with clinical reasoning and the intended purpose of the orthotic.

During an appointment, you may stand or sit while each foot is scanned. Wear or bring the shoes you use most often, and describe when symptoms appear, such as during walking, running, or prolonged standing. Ask how the scan will affect the orthotic shape, materials, and break-in plan.

Introduce a new insert gradually and check for rubbing, pressure, worsening pain, or numbness. Contact the prescribing clinician if these problems do not settle after removing the orthotic and resting the area.

Seek prompt assessment for sudden inability to bear weight, a visibly deformed foot, rapidly increasing swelling, a wound, new loss of sensation, or a foot that becomes unusually cold or pale. These signs need evaluation beyond an orthotic fitting.

Ask what problem the orthotic is intended to address, whether the scan changes the prescription, and how fit will be checked in your usual shoes. Ask when the device should be reviewed or adjusted.
