Why does whooping cough cause fever?

Fever is a common presentation of Whooping Cough. The illness can begin with symptoms resembling a cold, then develop into repeated bouts of coughing. Fever can occur with many infections and does not on its own identify whooping cough.

Forceful coughing may leave a person exhausted and can sometimes cause gagging or vomiting. Babies, pregnant people, and those with health conditions that affect breathing need particular attention when they have a significant cough.

Contact a clinician promptly if whooping cough is suspected. They can assess the cough, advise whether testing or treatment is needed, and explain steps to reduce passing infection to others.

Rest, fluids and regular small meals may be easier during coughing bouts. Avoid smoke and other airway irritants. Use fever medicines only as directed for the person’s age and health situation, and do not give medicines intended for adults to a child.

Seek emergency care immediately for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips or face, pauses in breathing, severe drowsiness, a seizure, or an infant who is feeding poorly or seems unusually floppy.

Get same-day medical advice for worsening fever, dehydration, repeated vomiting, chest pain, or a cough that is getting more severe. A baby with a cough should be assessed promptly.
