Why does whiplash cause neck stiffness?

Neck Stiffness is a common presentation of Whiplash. The tissues may become irritated and the surrounding muscles can tighten protectively, making turning, looking up, or looking over a shoulder uncomfortable.

Symptoms may be noticed straight away or after the initial shock has passed. Headache, shoulder discomfort, tiredness or difficulty concentrating can occur too. Neck stiffness also has causes unrelated to injury, so a clinician considers how the symptoms began and how they are changing.

After a minor injury, keep the neck gently moving within a comfortable range and avoid prolonged positions that increase pain. A wrapped cold or warm pack may feel soothing; protect the skin and use it for short periods.

Arrange a medical assessment if pain is significant, movement remains limited, or symptoms interfere with sleep, driving or daily tasks. A clinician can examine the neck and advise on pain relief, activity and whether further assessment is needed.

Seek urgent care after a collision or fall if you have severe neck pain, weakness, numbness or tingling in an arm or leg, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or a worsening severe headache.

Emergency assessment is also needed for confusion, fainting, repeated vomiting, seizures, or symptoms that suggest a head injury.
