Short answer

Vulvodynia causes vulval pain when pain-sensing nerves become over-responsive and the surrounding muscles may tighten in response to discomfort.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible pattern
Pain may be constant or triggered by touch, pressure, sitting or washing.
Skin appearance
The vulva can look normal even when nerve sensitivity is causing real pain.

How vulvodynia creates pain

Vulval Pain is a very common presentation of Vulvodynia. Pain may be present all the time or appear after touch, pressure, sitting, exercise, washing or sexual contact. People describe burning, soreness, stinging, throbbing or a raw feeling. The visible skin may look normal because the main change can involve how nerves process signals rather than an obvious wound.

Repeated pain can cause nearby pelvic-floor muscles to guard or tighten. That response can add aching and make touch more uncomfortable. Irritation, infection, a skin disorder or hormonal change can produce similar symptoms, so a diagnosis usually depends on the story, examination and sometimes targeted tests.

Steps that may ease irritation

Wash gently with lukewarm water or a bland, unscented cleanser, and avoid perfumed products, douches and harsh rubbing. Choose loose clothing and breathable underwear. Use a cool pack wrapped in fabric for short periods if it feels soothing. Do not apply a new cream repeatedly without advice, because some products can irritate sensitive skin. A clinician may discuss pelvic-floor physiotherapy, pain-focused treatment or management of another condition found during assessment.

When medical review matters

Book an appointment when pain lasts, returns frequently, affects sleep or movement, or makes sex or tampon use difficult. Seek prompt care for new sores, blisters, bleeding, fever, pus, rapidly increasing swelling or difficulty passing urine. Sudden severe pain also needs urgent assessment, especially after an injury.

Questions to take along

Ask what features support vulvodynia, what other causes should be checked, and whether a gentle examination or swab is appropriate. Discuss which products to stop, whether pelvic-floor muscles may be involved, and how progress will be reviewed.

Questions people ask

Is vulvodynia only a skin problem?

No. Pain processing by nerves and tightening of nearby muscles can contribute even when the skin looks unchanged.

Can vulval pain have another cause?

Yes. Infection, irritation, skin conditions and hormonal changes can overlap with these symptoms and need consideration.
