Why does vaginal thrush cause vulval pain?

Thrush can cause redness, swelling, itching and tiny areas of soreness around the vulva. Scratching, rubbing, urine touching inflamed skin, or sexual contact can make the burning more noticeable. Changes inside the vagina may also create irritation or a thick discharge. Vulval Pain is a common presentation of Vaginal Thrush, but similar symptoms can come from other infections, skin conditions, irritation or hormonal changes.

Keep the area gently clean and dry, avoid scented washes and deodorants, and choose loose, breathable underwear. Do not scratch, and pause sex if it increases pain.
