Why does urinary tract infection cause painful urination?

Bacteria in the urinary tract can trigger swelling and sensitivity in the bladder or urethra. Urine is normally expelled without much awareness, but contact with an inflamed surface can create burning, sharp discomfort, or soreness during and shortly after passing urine.

Painful Urination is a very common presentation of Urinary Tract Infection. It can occur alongside a frequent need to pass small amounts of urine, lower abdominal discomfort, or urine that looks or smells different. These features can also have causes other than an infection.

Arrange a clinical assessment, especially if this is new or persistent. A clinician may ask about your symptoms and take a urine sample to help decide whether treatment is needed. Drink fluids regularly unless you have been told to limit them, and do not hold urine for long periods.

Avoid using leftover antibiotics or sharing medicine. The right treatment depends on the cause, your health history, allergies, pregnancy status, and whether symptoms suggest infection elsewhere in the urinary system.

Seek urgent medical care for fever, chills, pain in the side or back below the ribs, vomiting, confusion, or feeling severely unwell. These symptoms can occur when infection needs prompt assessment. Get timely advice if you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system, have kidney disease, or symptoms occur in a child or a man.

Ask whether a urine test is appropriate, whether another condition could be irritating the urethra, and what changes should prompt you to return. If infections keep recurring, ask about possible triggers and whether any further assessment is useful.
