Why does urinary tract infection cause fever?

Fever is a common presentation of Urinary Tract Infection. Immune signals released during infection can reset the body’s temperature response, causing a high temperature, chills, sweating, aches, or fatigue. A fever may occur with bladder symptoms such as burning or urgency, but some people notice general illness first. Fever has many possible causes, including infections outside the urinary tract, so it does not identify the source by itself. Urinary symptoms and examination help direct testing.

Rest, take fluids regularly if you can, and monitor how you feel. Arrange a clinical review if fever occurs with pain or changes in urination; a urine sample may help identify infection. Use fever medicine only if it is suitable for you and follow the label or your clinician’s advice. Do not delay assessment by using antibiotics prescribed for someone else or left from an earlier episode.

Seek prompt medical care for fever with flank or back pain, vomiting, shaking chills, confusion, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Get early advice for fever during pregnancy or if you have kidney disease, diabetes, a catheter, or reduced immunity. Urgent care is also appropriate when symptoms worsen despite treatment or you feel seriously unwell.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest a urinary source, whether urine testing is needed, and which warning signs apply to you. Share the timing of fever, urinary symptoms, recent travel, medication use, allergies, pregnancy status, and any previous kidney or urinary problems.
