Why does triple-negative breast cancer cause breast lump?

Triple-negative breast cancer is named for the absence of three commonly tested receptors on the cancer cells. Like other breast cancers, it can begin when cells multiply in an uncontrolled way. As the cell cluster enlarges, it may feel different from surrounding tissue. The mass can be firm, less mobile, or painless, although breast lumps vary in texture and tenderness.

A breast lump is a common presentation of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer. However, many breast lumps have non-cancerous causes such as cysts, fibroadenoma, infection, or normal cyclical change. Feeling a lump cannot determine its cause.

Arrange a clinical breast assessment for any new, persistent, or changing lump. The clinician may examine the breast and armpit and recommend imaging; sometimes a tissue sample is needed to identify the cells. Note when you first noticed it, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and any skin or nipple changes.

Seek prompt medical advice for a new lump with skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, persistent one-sided swelling, or a lump in the armpit. Urgent care is appropriate for severe redness, warmth, fever, or rapidly worsening breast pain and swelling.

Ask which examination and imaging are appropriate, whether a biopsy is needed, and what the findings could mean. If cancer is diagnosed, ask how receptor testing was performed, what stage information is available, and which treatment team will guide the next steps.
