Why does trichomoniasis cause vaginal odour?

Trichomoniasis irritates the vagina and cervix. The resulting inflammation can increase discharge and alter its fluid, mucus, and cellular contents. Those changes may make the odour stronger or different from your usual scent. It may occur with unusual discharge, itching, soreness, or burning when passing urine.

Odour alone cannot identify the cause. Bacterial vaginosis, a retained tampon, sweat, hormonal changes, and other infections can also change vaginal smell. A new odour deserves an assessment when it persists or comes with other symptoms.

Arrange testing with a clinician, especially after a new sexual exposure or if discharge and irritation are present. Avoid douching, deodorant sprays, and fragranced washes; they can disturb the area and conceal symptoms. Follow prescribed treatment exactly, and ask whether recent partners need evaluation. Avoid sex until your clinician advises that treatment is complete.

Get medical advice for odour with pelvic pain, fever, sores, unusual bleeding, painful urination, or marked irritation. If you are pregnant, contact a clinician about new odour or discharge rather than self-treating. Return for review if the smell continues after treatment.
