Why does trichomoniasis cause vaginal discharge?

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. Irritation of the vagina and cervix can increase secretions and bring inflammatory cells into the fluid. The discharge may look thinner or more plentiful than usual and can appear yellowish, greenish, or greyish. Odour, soreness, burning with urination, or discomfort during sex may occur as well.

Some people have mild symptoms or none at all. Discharge can also change with bacterial vaginosis, thrush, hormonal shifts, or another infection, so appearance cannot identify the cause by itself.

Arrange testing with a sexual health clinician or doctor rather than treating based only on colour or smell. Tell them about recent partners, symptoms, pregnancy possibility, and any medicines or allergies. Avoid sex until you have received advice and completed prescribed treatment; partners may need assessment and treatment to reduce reinfection. Avoid douching, which can further irritate the vagina.

Seek medical care for new or persistent discharge, pelvic pain, fever, sores, bleeding after sex, or pain when urinating. Get prompt advice if you are pregnant and notice unusual discharge or pelvic symptoms, because an untreated infection needs appropriate management.

Ask which tests check for trichomoniasis and other infections, when results will be available, whether partners should be contacted, and when sex can safely resume. Ask what to do if symptoms remain after treatment.
