Short answer

A transient ischaemic attack can cause weakness on one side when reduced blood flow briefly affects the brain area that sends movement signals to muscles on the opposite side of the body.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How a TIA affects movement

Movement starts with electrical commands from the brain. Many of these nerve pathways cross as they travel downward, which is why a problem in one side of the brain can affect the other side of the face, arm or leg. A person may notice a drooping face, a drifting arm, a weak grip or a leg that feels difficult to control.

Weakness on One Side is a very common presentation of Transient Ischaemic Attack. It may clear as circulation is restored, yet temporary recovery does not rule out a serious blood-flow event or remove the need for assessment.

What to do now

Call emergency services if one-sided weakness starts suddenly. Note the onset time, or when the person was last well, and keep them in a safe position while help is on the way. Do not allow driving, even if the weakness seems mild or starts to improve.

At the hospital, the team may examine strength, coordination, sensation and speech, as well as check the heart and blood vessels. Share a complete medicine list and mention recent episodes of visual change, speech problems, falls or unusual headaches.

When to seek care

Sudden weakness of the face, arm or leg needs emergency care, particularly on one side. Seek immediate help when it is paired with slurred speech, numbness, confusion, trouble seeing, dizziness or a new severe headache. Do not wait for a routine clinic appointment to decide whether these new symptoms will pass.

Questions to ask

Ask whether the episode is thought to be a TIA, a stroke or another neurological problem. Ask which tests will look at the brain, heart and blood vessels, what treatment is recommended, and what changes in symptoms should trigger another emergency call.

Questions people ask

Why is the weakness often on the opposite side?

Many movement pathways cross between the brain and body, so a brain event can affect the opposite side.

Can one-sided weakness be subtle?

Yes. A weak hand grip, facial droop, arm drift or clumsy leg can all be important changes.
