Why Tonsillitis Can Cause Earache

This is called referred pain. The ear and throat are connected to parts of the same sensory nerve network, and the brain may register a signal from an inflamed tonsil as pain in or around the ear. The ear can therefore feel sharp, dull, or blocked despite looking normal on examination.

Earache is a common presentation of Tonsillitis. Ear pain can also arise from an ear infection, jaw problems, teeth, or other throat conditions, so the symptom alone cannot show where the problem began.

Focus on easing the throat inflammation: rest, drink regularly, and choose foods and drinks that feel comfortable. Avoid inserting cotton buds, drops, or other objects into the ear unless a clinician has advised them, because referred pain does not need ear cleaning.

Use pain medicine only according to the label or individual clinical advice. If you have long-term health conditions, are pregnant, or take regular medicines, ask a pharmacist or clinician which option is suitable.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, drooling, inability to swallow saliva, severe neck swelling, or a voice that sounds muffled. These symptoms can signal significant throat swelling and need prompt care.

Book a clinical review for ear discharge, new hearing loss, swelling or redness around the ear, severe worsening pain, or symptoms that do not settle. An examination of both the ear and throat helps distinguish referred pain from a separate ear problem.

Ask whether the ear appears healthy, whether the throat pattern suggests tonsillitis, and what symptoms should prompt another review. Tell them if the pain is on one side, follows dental pain, or comes with reduced hearing or discharge.
