Why does threadworms cause abdominal pain?

Threadworms live in the bowel. Their presence can cause cramping, vague tummy discomfort or a change in appetite for some people. Itching around the anus, particularly at night, is another familiar feature because female worms lay eggs around the anal area. Interrupted sleep from itching can make discomfort and tiredness feel harder to manage. Abdominal Pain is a common presentation of Threadworms, but abdominal pain has many other causes.

Symptoms can occur in children and adults. The infection spreads when eggs are transferred from hands or surfaces to the mouth, so reinfection within a household can happen if hygiene measures are missed.

Speak with a pharmacist or clinician about a suitable treatment, particularly for a young child, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or if anyone in the household has a medical condition or takes regular medicines. Follow the advice for treatment of close household contacts where appropriate. Wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before food, keep fingernails short, and avoid nail biting or scratching.

Morning washing, fresh underwear and regular laundering of bedding, towels and sleepwear can help remove eggs. Clean commonly touched bathroom and kitchen surfaces as part of the household plan.

Get urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a hard swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, blood in stool, fainting, or signs of dehydration. Arrange a clinical review if pain persists after treatment advice, the diagnosis is uncertain, symptoms keep returning, or there is weight loss, fever or a marked change in bowel habits.
