Why does swimmer's ear cause earache?

Short answer
Swimmer's ear causes earache because infection or irritation makes the narrow outer ear canal swollen, inflamed, and sensitive to pressure.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pain trigger
- Moving or pressing the outer ear may worsen canal inflammation
- Useful precaution
- Keep the ear dry and leave wax removal to a clinician
Why the pain can feel sharp
The outer ear canal is lined with delicate skin over bone and cartilage, leaving little room for swelling. In swimmer's ear, moisture or minor damage to that skin can lead to inflammation. As the canal narrows, everyday movement of the outer ear can pull on sore tissue and trigger pain.
Earache is a very common presentation of Swimmer's Ear. Pain may become more noticeable when you press the small flap at the ear entrance, pull the outer ear, chew, or lie on that side. It may occur with itchiness, a blocked sensation, discharge, or muffled hearing. Ear pain also has causes outside the canal, including dental and throat problems.
Caring for a painful ear
Keep water out of the affected ear and avoid swimming while symptoms are active. Do not scratch inside the canal or try to remove wax with cotton buds. A warm cloth held against the outside of the ear may be comforting. A pharmacist can advise on pain relief that is appropriate for you.
If a clinician confirms swimmer's ear, treatment may include ear drops chosen for the cause and the condition of the eardrum. Use drops exactly as directed and mention any previous ear surgery, a hole in the eardrum, diabetes, or immune-system condition.
When to seek care
Seek same-day medical advice if pain is severe, the ear becomes very swollen, you have fever, discharge, new hearing change, or pain that is worsening despite basic care. Get urgent help for swelling or redness spreading around the ear, dizziness, weakness in the face, or if you feel very unwell.
Questions to ask
Ask whether the pain is coming from the ear canal, whether the eardrum is intact, which activities to avoid, and what symptoms should prompt an earlier review.

Questions people ask
Why does touching my outer ear hurt?
Movement can press or stretch inflamed skin in the outer ear canal.
Can I use cotton buds to relieve the blockage?
No. They can injure the canal and compact debris, making pain or blockage worse.
