Why does stroke cause slurred speech?

Speaking clearly requires the lips, tongue, jaw, voice, and breathing muscles to move in a precise sequence. A stroke can interrupt the brain signals that coordinate those movements, so speech may sound slow, thick, weak, or indistinct. This is called dysarthria. Slurred Speech is a very common presentation of Stroke. Some people may also have trouble finding words or understanding language, which is a different communication problem.

If speech becomes suddenly slurred, call emergency services immediately and note when the person was last known to be speaking normally. Keep them safe and do not give food, drink, or medicines by mouth until a clinical team has assessed swallowing. Do not wait for the voice to return to normal before seeking help.

Sudden slurred speech is an emergency, especially with a drooping face, one-sided weakness, numbness, altered vision, confusion, or severe new headache. Emergency assessment is still needed if the symptom resolves. After a diagnosed stroke, new or worsening speech change also needs immediate medical attention.

Ask whether the change is dysarthria, a language difficulty, or both; whether swallowing should be checked; and which communication supports are suitable. A speech and language therapist can advise on exercises, safer communication methods, and the support needed at home.
