Why does stroke cause numbness and tingling?

The brain continuously sorts signals about touch, temperature, pressure, and body position. When a stroke affects the sensory pathways, a person may feel pins and needles, reduced feeling, or an unfamiliar sensation in the face, arm, leg, or one side of the body. Numbness and Tingling is a common presentation of Stroke. The pattern can be sudden and may occur with weakness, altered speech, or loss of coordination.

Take note of the exact time the sensation changed and which body areas are involved. Do not drive yourself for assessment. Sudden new numbness or tingling, particularly on one side, needs emergency help right away when it is accompanied by facial drooping, weakness, speech difficulty, or a new balance problem.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden numbness or tingling in the face, arm, or leg, even if it begins to fade. Seek the same urgent help for confusion, a severe new headache, vision change, weakness, or trouble speaking. A clinician needs to distinguish a possible stroke from other causes and act promptly.
