Why does strep throat cause fever?

When the body detects an infection, immune signals can reset its temperature control point. You may feel chilled as the temperature rises, then warm or sweaty as it changes. Strep throat often also causes throat pain, pain on swallowing, headache, tender glands in the neck, or feeling generally unwell. Fever is a very common presentation of Strep Throat, but fever can result from many infections and non-infectious conditions.

The height of a temperature reading alone does not identify the cause. The associated symptoms, your age, medical history, examination, and sometimes a throat test guide the next step.

Drink fluids regularly and rest. Wear light clothing if you feel overheated, and use a comfortable room temperature. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a fever medicine is suitable for you or your child, particularly if there are other health conditions or regular medicines. If a clinician prescribes antibiotics for confirmed strep throat, use them as directed and do not share them.

Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, confusion, a stiff neck, a seizure, a purple or non-fading rash, or severe weakness. Get prompt advice if fever accompanies dehydration, repeated vomiting, a rapidly worsening sore throat, or an inability to swallow fluids. Infants and people with a weakened immune system should be assessed promptly when fever develops.

Ask whether throat testing is appropriate, which symptoms should trigger re-assessment, how to manage fluids and discomfort, and when it is reasonable to return to work or school. Share the temperature pattern, other symptoms, recent contacts, and medicines already taken.
