Why does strep throat cause difficulty swallowing?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection that can make the tissues at the back of the throat red, swollen, and sore. Swallowing uses throat muscles to move food and liquid past those sensitive tissues, so even a sip may sting. Enlarged tonsils or nearby lymph nodes can add a sensation of tightness. Difficulty Swallowing is a common presentation of Strep Throat, although viruses, reflux, allergies, and other conditions can also affect swallowing.

Painful swallowing is different from being unable to swallow. A feeling that food is stuck, drooling because swallowing saliva is too difficult, or a muffled voice needs prompt assessment.

Contact a clinician if symptoms suggest strep throat, because a throat examination and test can help distinguish it from other causes. Follow the treatment plan if prescribed, including taking medicine exactly as directed. Rest, frequent sips of fluid, soft foods, and warm or cool drinks may be more comfortable. Avoid sharing cups or utensils while unwell, and wash hands regularly.

Seek urgent care if breathing is difficult, you cannot swallow saliva, you are drooling, you cannot keep fluids down, or swelling is rapidly worsening. Get prompt medical advice for dehydration signs such as very little urine, marked drowsiness, dizziness, or a dry mouth, especially in children and older adults.

Ask whether testing is needed, what would point to a different cause, which foods and drinks are easiest to manage, and when you should expect swallowing to become more comfortable. Tell the clinician about medicine allergies, recurrent throat infections, and any trouble opening your mouth.
