Why stomach cancer can cause persistent indigestion

Short answer

Persistent Indigestion is a very common presentation of Stomach Cancer. A tumour can irritate the stomach lining, disturb its movement, or slow the passage of food, producing ongoing fullness, burning, bloating, nausea, or upper abdominal discomfort. Persistent indigestion also has many other possible causes, so this symptom by itself does not identify cancer.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may change digestion

Digestion depends on the stomach relaxing, mixing food, and emptying it gradually. A growth or inflammation in the stomach can interfere with one or more of these actions. The result may be discomfort after meals, belching, early fullness, or nausea. Some people notice symptoms that resemble reflux or an ulcer. The pattern, duration, appetite, bowel changes, and examination findings help a clinician decide whether further investigation is needed.

Steps that can help assessment

Book a medical appointment when indigestion persists, changes from your usual pattern, or interferes with eating or sleep. Write down foods, meal timing, burning or pain, nausea, vomiting, stool colour, and medicines such as anti-inflammatory painkillers. Eat slowly and avoid lying down immediately after meals if that reduces discomfort. Do not rely on repeated self-treatment without review when symptoms continue.

When to seek care promptly

Seek prompt care for vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, trouble swallowing, severe or worsening pain, faintness, marked weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. A new persistent symptom accompanied by reduced appetite or unintended weight change also deserves timely assessment, even though it can have several explanations.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux, ulcer disease, medicine irritation, or another condition, and whether testing such as an endoscopy is appropriate. Ask which treatments are safe for you and what change would require urgent review.

Questions people ask

Can indigestion occur without stomach cancer?

Yes. Reflux, ulcers, medicines, inflammation, and other conditions can cause indigestion, so evaluation considers the whole pattern.

When should ongoing indigestion be reviewed?

Arrange a review when it persists, changes, disrupts eating or sleep, or occurs with vomiting, bleeding, or reduced appetite.
