Why does stomach cancer cause difficulty swallowing?

Food passes down the oesophagus, also called the food pipe, before entering the stomach. A tumour at the upper part of the stomach or close to this junction can reduce the available space or make the area less flexible. People may notice food seeming to stick, discomfort when swallowing, regurgitation or a gradual change in what textures they can manage. Difficulty Swallowing is a common presentation of Stomach Cancer, but swallowing difficulty also has many non-cancer causes, including reflux-related narrowing, inflammation and muscle or nerve conditions.

Arrange a medical appointment promptly for new or progressive swallowing difficulty. Until you are assessed, take small bites, chew thoroughly, choose textures that pass comfortably and remain upright while eating. Do not force food or tablets down if they feel stuck. Keep a note of whether solids, liquids or both are difficult, and mention weight change, vomiting, pain, black stools or reduced appetite during your assessment.

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot swallow saliva or liquids, have food stuck in your throat or chest, develop breathing difficulty, cough or choke repeatedly while eating, vomit blood, pass black stools, or feel faint. These signs can indicate obstruction, bleeding or aspiration and require prompt evaluation. Persistent swallowing difficulty also needs medical assessment even without these warning signs.

Ask what may be causing the swallowing problem and whether you need an examination of the oesophagus and stomach. Explain how the symptom has changed and whether it affects solids, liquids or both. Ask how to maintain nutrition and hydration safely while tests are being arranged, and which symptoms should lead you to seek urgent help.
