Why does Stevens-Johnson syndrome cause a rash with fever?

Stevens-Johnson syndrome often begins with feeling unwell, fever, sore throat, or burning eyes before skin changes become clear. The immune system reacts strongly, commonly after exposure to a medicine and sometimes after an infection. Inflammatory signals can raise body temperature, while the skin response may cause tender red or dusky areas that spread and blister. The lips, mouth, eyes, and genital tissues may also become sore or damaged.

This pattern is an emergency warning rather than an ordinary rash. A rash with fever has many possible causes, so the combination cannot identify Stevens-Johnson syndrome by itself. The appearance, timing, medicines, and examination findings guide diagnosis.

If Stevens-Johnson syndrome is suspected, seek emergency medical assessment immediately and take a list or photographs of every medicine and supplement used recently. Do not take another dose of a suspected new medicine unless an emergency clinician specifically tells you to do so. Avoid peeling blisters or applying unfamiliar creams. Hospital care may provide fluids, wound protection, pain relief, and specialist support for the eyes, mouth, or other affected areas.

Go to an emergency department for a fever with a rapidly spreading, painful, blistering, or peeling rash. Urgent care is also needed for mouth sores that make drinking difficult, eye pain or light sensitivity, trouble breathing, faintness, or reduced urination. These signs can reflect involvement beyond the skin and should not be watched at home.

Ask which recent medicine or infection may be relevant, which products must be avoided, whether the eyes and mouth need specialist review, and how suspected drug reactions should be recorded for future care.
