Why does soft tissue sarcoma cause a new lump or swelling?

Soft tissue sarcomas can develop in areas such as an arm, leg, trunk or deeper body tissue. As the mass expands, it may push against muscle, nerves or blood vessels. A deeper lump can be difficult to see at first and may feel firm or less mobile than the surrounding tissue. Pain, tingling, weakness or reduced movement may appear if nearby structures are compressed.

Many lumps are caused by harmless problems such as cysts, fatty growths, bruising or infection. Features such as steady growth, depth, firmness or persistence help determine whether imaging and specialist assessment are needed; they do not establish a diagnosis by themselves.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new lump that remains, enlarges or feels deep or fixed. Avoid repeatedly pressing or attempting to drain it. Note its location, approximate size, rate of change, pain, skin changes and effect on movement. Ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging may help map the mass, and a planned biopsy may identify its tissue type.

Seek urgent help if swelling causes sudden severe pain, loss of movement, marked numbness, a cold or pale limb, or difficulty breathing. Contact a clinician promptly if a lump grows quickly, bleeds, changes the skin, or causes persistent pain or weakness.

Ask whether the mass is superficial or deep, which scan is most useful, whether biopsy should be planned by the treating team, and which changes require faster review.
