Why does small bowel cancer cause persistent abdominal pain?

The small bowel moves food and fluid through a muscular tube. A growing tumour may make the wall less flexible or partly narrow the passage, causing cramping as the bowel contracts. Irritation of nearby tissues can create a steady ache, while intermittent blockage may bring waves of pain, bloating, vomiting or changes in bowel movements.

Pain can occur for many reasons unrelated to cancer, including constipation, ulcers, gallbladder disease, infection and inflammatory bowel conditions. Its location, timing, relationship to meals, and accompanying symptoms help a clinician decide which evaluation is appropriate.

Book a medical review for pain that persists, recurs or interferes with eating, sleep or usual activities. Keep a record of its location, severity, timing, food triggers, bowel changes, vomiting and weight change. Assessment may include an abdominal examination, blood tests, imaging or a camera test of the digestive tract, depending on the findings.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen rigid abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, black stools, or blood in vomit or stool. Prompt review is also appropriate when pain comes with fainting, fever, dehydration or unexplained weight loss.
