Why does shoulder osteoarthritis cause shoulder popping and clicking?

Short answer
Shoulder Popping and Clicking is a common presentation of Shoulder Osteoarthritis because worn joint surfaces and altered movement can create sound or a catching sensation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the popping can mean
The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint. Osteoarthritis can thin the smooth cartilage that helps the ball move quietly in its socket. As the surfaces become less even, movement may produce grating, clicking, or popping. Tight muscles, inflammation, and changes in the way you lift the arm can add to the sensation. A sound without pain or loss of function may be less concerning, while painful catching, swelling, or reduced movement deserves assessment.
What you can do
Notice which movements trigger the sound and whether pain, weakness, or a feeling of instability occurs with it. Keep the shoulder gently moving within a comfortable range, avoid repeatedly forcing a painful motion, and use the activity changes or exercises recommended by a clinician. A clinician may assess your range of motion and strength and decide whether imaging is useful.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review if popping is painful, follows an injury, progressively limits dressing or reaching, or occurs with marked weakness. Seek urgent care after a major injury if the shoulder looks deformed, or if you cannot use the arm. Sudden chest discomfort, breathlessness, or sweating also needs emergency attention rather than a shoulder assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the sound fits joint wear, a tendon problem, or another cause; which movements are safe; whether physiotherapy could help; and what changes should prompt a review.

Questions people ask
Is shoulder popping always painful with osteoarthritis?
No. Popping may occur with or without pain, but painful noise or declining movement should be assessed.
Can exercises stop the clicking?
Exercises may improve motion and muscle control, although the sound may not disappear completely.
