Short answer

Most people with Seborrheic Dermatitis notice scaly skin because inflammation changes surface shedding and binds shed cells with sebum.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How scaling develops

Seborrheic dermatitis affects areas with active oil glands, such as the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose, ears and upper chest. Inflammation can make the outer layer shed in more visible clumps. Sebum then coats those cells, giving the scale a dry, powdery, waxy or greasy appearance. The surrounding skin may be red, itchy or sensitive. Scaly Skin is a very common presentation of Seborrheic Dermatitis, but scaling can also accompany psoriasis, eczema, a fungal infection or a reaction to a product.

Caring for scaly patches

Clean affected skin gently with lukewarm water and a mild product, then pat dry. Do not peel or scrub scales away, because that can create tiny wounds and increase inflammation. A healthcare professional may recommend an antifungal or anti-inflammatory treatment suited to the location; use it exactly as directed and keep products intended for skin away from the eyes. Avoid fragranced products and heavy oils on active patches until the skin is calmer.

When a review is needed

Arrange medical advice if scaling is painful, rapidly spreading, deeply cracked, bleeding, oozing or associated with patchy hair loss. Get help when the face, eyelids or ear canals are involved, or when the rash does not improve with gentle care. A clinician can examine the scale, check for infection or a different inflammatory condition, and adjust treatment for the affected body site.

Questions to ask

Ask which diagnosis best fits the scale, whether you need treatment for the scalp as well as the face or body, and how to use each product safely. Ask how to recognise infection and what maintenance routine may reduce future flares.

Questions people ask

Does all scaling mean the skin is dry?

No. Seborrheic dermatitis can create scale in oily areas, where shed cells mix with sebum and inflammation.

Why can the scale look yellow or greasy?

Surface skin cells may combine with sebum, making the scale look waxy or yellowish rather than powdery.
