Why does seborrheic dermatitis cause a flaky scalp?

Healthy skin continually sheds small amounts of surface cells. During seborrheic dermatitis, irritation can make this turnover more noticeable. Shed cells may stick together instead of falling away individually, especially when mixed with sebum. Flakes can look white, yellowish or slightly greasy, and the scalp underneath may be red or itchy. Flaky Scalp is a very common presentation of Seborrheic Dermatitis, though dandruff-like scaling can have other causes and needs context for accurate identification.

Wash the scalp gently and regularly, allowing water and cleanser to loosen flakes rather than scraping them off. If recommended, use a medicated shampoo according to its instructions; some products need contact with the scalp for a short period before rinsing. Brush gently and avoid picking, as lifting scale forcefully can create small breaks in the skin. Rinse styling products thoroughly and pause any new product that causes stinging, redness or increased flaking.

See a clinician if scale becomes thick, forms stuck-on plaques, bleeds, smells unusual or is accompanied by pus, pain or patchy hair loss. Arrange an assessment when flakes continue after a consistent care routine or appear on other body areas. Psoriasis, eczema, fungal infection and product sensitivity can resemble seborrheic dermatitis, and treatment differs between them.
