Why does scarlet fever cause sore throat?

Scarlet fever is associated with an infection caused by group A streptococcal bacteria. Inflammation in the throat can produce redness, tenderness and pain when swallowing. Sore Throat is a common presentation of Scarlet Fever. Some people also develop fever, headache, swollen neck glands or a rough-feeling red rash. A sore throat has many possible causes, including viral infections and irritation, so its presence alone does not identify the cause. A healthcare professional may examine the throat and decide whether testing or treatment is needed.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly if scarlet fever is suspected, especially when a rash occurs with fever and throat pain. Follow the treatment plan exactly if medicine is prescribed. Rest, take regular fluids and choose soft foods or cool drinks if swallowing is uncomfortable. Use pain or fever medicine only as directed on the label or by a clinician, and check suitability for children, pregnancy and other health conditions. Avoid sharing cups, cutlery or towels while unwell, and wash hands carefully.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, drooling or inability to swallow saliva, severe neck swelling, confusion, a rapidly worsening illness, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine.
