Why does scapular dyskinesis cause shoulder popping and clicking?

Short answer

Scapular dyskinesis can cause shoulder popping and clicking because the shoulder blade does not move smoothly against the rib cage or coordinate normally with the upper arm. This altered motion may make muscles, tendons, or joint surfaces shift noisily during reaching or lifting. Shoulder Popping and Clicking is a common presentation of Scapular Dyskinesis.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main mechanism
Altered shoulder-blade movement can change how nearby muscles, tendons, and joint surfaces glide.
Useful assessment
A clinician observes the shoulder blade during arm movement and checks strength, pain, and range of motion.
Seek care sooner
Pain after injury, deformity, sudden weakness, numbness, or inability to use the arm needs prompt attention.

What the sound may mean

The shoulder blade should rotate, tilt, and glide as the arm moves. With scapular dyskinesis, weakness, tightness, fatigue, pain, or a change in movement control can disturb that sequence. The altered position may increase rubbing or tension around the shoulder, so a tendon can snap over a nearby surface or the blade can move with a grating sensation. A sound without pain, weakness, swelling, or loss of movement may be less concerning, but the sound alone cannot identify its cause. Other shoulder problems can also produce clicking, which is why an examination looks at the neck, shoulder joint, shoulder blade, strength, and movement pattern together.

What you can do

Notice which actions trigger the noise, such as overhead reaching, pushing, throwing, or lying on that side, and whether pain or weakness accompanies it. Temporarily reduce movements that repeatedly provoke symptoms while keeping the shoulder gently active within a comfortable range. A physiotherapist can assess shoulder-blade control and build a gradual programme for the rotator cuff, upper-back muscles, and chest or shoulder flexibility. Avoid forcing the shoulder into a click or starting heavy strengthening when movement is painful.

When to seek care

Arrange a clinical assessment if popping is painful, began after an injury, is accompanied by a feeling of slipping, or comes with reduced strength or range of motion. Seek prompt medical care after a significant injury if the shoulder looks out of place, cannot be used, or becomes suddenly swollen or numb. Ongoing symptoms that interfere with work, sleep, sport, or daily tasks also deserve review, even when the sound itself is mild.

Questions for your doctor or physiotherapist

Ask what movement pattern is producing the sound and whether the shoulder blade, rotator cuff, neck, or joint needs examination. You can also ask which activities to modify, how to progress strengthening safely, and what changes should prompt an earlier review. If you have a video of the movement, showing when the click occurs may help explain the pattern.

Questions people ask

Is shoulder clicking from scapular dyskinesis always painful?

No. Some people notice noise without pain, while others have soreness, weakness, fatigue, or restricted movement. Painful or worsening clicking should be assessed.

Can physiotherapy help scapular dyskinesis?

Physiotherapy may help by identifying movement and strength contributors, then using a gradual programme to improve shoulder-blade control and shoulder function.

Should I stop moving my shoulder when it clicks?

Avoid repeatedly forcing the click or pushing through pain, but gentle comfortable movement is usually more useful than complete rest. A clinician can tailor activity advice.
