Why Does a Scaphoid Fracture Cause Wrist Pain?

Wrist Pain is a common presentation of Scaphoid Fracture. The scaphoid is a small bone on the thumb side of the wrist that helps connect wrist motion with the forearm. A break can irritate the bone surface and surrounding capsule, ligaments, and soft tissues. Movement at the fracture site may trigger pain, while swelling and protective muscle tightening can add stiffness.

Tenderness is often felt in the hollow at the base of the thumb, and gripping, pushing through the hand, or moving the wrist may be uncomfortable. A scaphoid fracture can be difficult to see on an early X-ray, so ongoing tenderness after a fall onto the hand needs medical review even if swelling is limited.

Keep the wrist supported and avoid gripping, lifting, or leaning through that hand until it has been assessed. A cold pack wrapped in cloth may reduce swelling for short periods; keep the hand raised when comfortable. Do not try to force the wrist through painful movement or massage the tender area.

A clinician may examine the thumb-side wrist and decide whether repeat imaging or another scan is needed. Follow the advice about a splint or cast, and return for reassessment if pain remains despite initial imaging or support.

Seek prompt medical assessment after a fall or impact if thumb-side wrist pain or tenderness persists, particularly when gripping is difficult. Get urgent care if the hand becomes numb, pale, blue, unusually cold, visibly deformed, or rapidly more swollen.
