Why does scabies cause skin rash?

The mite enters the outer skin and forms tiny tracks. The body responds to the mite, its eggs and waste with inflammation, which can produce small itchy bumps, spots or thin burrow-like lines. Scratching may add scabs, excoriations and sore patches. The rash often affects hands, finger webs, wrists, elbows, waist, buttocks or genital skin, but its appearance can vary with age and skin tone. Skin Rash is a common presentation of Scabies, yet many other conditions cause rashes, so appearance alone is not enough for diagnosis.

Arrange an examination if the rash is itchy, spreading or affecting someone else in the home. Avoid sharing towels, clothing and bedding while seeking advice. Keep nails short, wash gently and use cool compresses to limit skin damage from scratching. Scabies needs treatment aimed at the mites, with careful instructions about where and when to apply it. People with close skin contact may need assessment at the same time to reduce repeated exposure.

Seek prompt care if the rash becomes painful, hot, swollen, crusted or produces pus, or if fever develops. Urgent assessment is appropriate for extensive crusting, rapid spread or symptoms in a person with reduced immunity. Arrange follow-up when the rash or itch continues after the advised treatment, since the skin may still be inflamed or the original diagnosis may need reconsideration.
