Why does scabies cause itchy skin?

A scabies mite lives in the outermost layer of skin and creates tiny burrows. The immune system recognises the mite and the material it leaves behind, releasing signals that activate itch-sensing nerves. This response can continue after mites have been eliminated because inflammation takes time to settle. Itchy Skin is a very common presentation of Scabies, but itchy skin by itself does not identify scabies; allergies, eczema, dry skin and other infestations can produce a similar feeling. The pattern of affected areas and close-contact history helps a clinician decide what is most likely.

Try a cool compress, keep nails short and pat rather than scratch. Use gentle, fragrance-free products and avoid hot showers, scrubs and newly introduced cosmetics while the skin is inflamed. Arrange medical advice for treatment that targets the infestation rather than only soothing symptoms. Follow application instructions carefully, including the areas and timing specified. Close contacts may need evaluation together, and recently used clothing, towels and bedding should be handled according to clinical guidance.

Seek an assessment if itch is persistent, intense, worse at night, spreading to close contacts or accompanied by a rash in finger webs, wrists, waist or genital skin. Get prompt care for painful sores, pus, rapidly increasing redness, fever or facial swelling. If symptoms continue after treatment, ask for review rather than repeatedly applying products, because ongoing itch can reflect inflammation, reinfestation or another diagnosis.
