Why does rubella cause swollen glands?

Lymph nodes contain immune cells that recognise and respond to infections. When those cells are activated, a node can feel larger or tender. With rubella, swollen glands may be noticed at the back of the neck or behind the ears. Most people with Rubella notice swollen glands, but swollen glands can also follow many other infections.
