Why does ringworm cause scaly skin?

Ringworm is a superficial fungal infection, not a worm. The fungus uses keratin in the outer skin, and the local immune response can produce dryness, flaking, roughness, and a raised edge. A patch may gradually enlarge or form a ring, but its appearance can vary across different skin tones and body areas. Scaly Skin is a common presentation of Ringworm. Scaling alone cannot identify the cause, because eczema, psoriasis, irritation, and other conditions can look similar.

Seek prompt care for pus, increasing warmth, marked swelling, fever, or significant pain.
