Why does ringworm cause skin rash?

Skin Rash is a common presentation of Ringworm. Most people with Ringworm notice an itchy, scaly, or dry area that may expand outward while the centre looks clearer. The border can be raised, red, darker, or more noticeable than the middle, but ringworm does not always form a perfect ring. It can affect the body, groin, feet, scalp, or nails, and each site may look different. The fungus can spread through close skin contact, shared towels, clothing, sports equipment, or infected pets.

Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels, clothing, combs, or sports gear. Wash worn fabrics regularly and do not scratch the rash. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on an antifungal treatment suitable for the site; use it for the recommended duration even if the surface starts to improve. Do not use a steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash, because it can alter the appearance and allow the infection to persist.

Arrange medical advice if the rash involves the scalp or nails, affects a child, is widespread, or does not improve with appropriate antifungal care. Seek prompt review for pus, increasing warmth, severe pain, fever, or rapidly spreading inflammation. A rash that keeps returning may need confirmation of the diagnosis and a different treatment plan.

Ask whether the rash needs a skin scraping or another test, which treatment fits its location, how to protect household members, and whether a pet or shared item could be a source of reinfection.
