Why does rheumatoid arthritis cause hot, red, swollen joint?

Hot, Red, Swollen Joint is a common presentation of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Inflamed joint tissues release signals that widen nearby blood vessels and draw fluid and immune cells into the area. This can make the skin look red, the joint feel warmer than the other side, and movement become painful or limited. A hot, red, swollen joint can also result from infection, injury or another inflammatory condition, so the appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Rest the joint from heavy or repetitive loading while keeping movement gentle and comfortable. A cool pack wrapped in cloth may help with heat and discomfort for brief periods.
