Why does rheumatoid arthritis cause hand swelling?

Hand Swelling is a common presentation of Rheumatoid Arthritis. The immune system can keep the joint lining inflamed, causing extra fluid and puffiness around the knuckles, finger joints or wrists. Swelling may make rings feel tight, reduce grip strength and limit finger movement. It can fluctuate with disease activity and may occur alongside tenderness, warmth or stiffness. Hand swelling has other possible causes, so its pattern should be assessed rather than assumed.

Remove tight rings early if the fingers are becoming puffy. Rest from tasks that increase pain, but continue gentle, comfortable movement to avoid becoming more stiff. Elevating the hand and using a wrapped cool pack may reduce discomfort for a short period. Keep a note of which joints swell, when it appears and how long it lasts; this helps your clinician judge the pattern and adjust treatment.

Book an assessment for swelling that persists, returns often, or interferes with gripping and daily tasks. Seek urgent care when swelling is sudden and severe, the hand is very hot and painful, the skin changes colour, sensation is lost, or fever accompanies the joint symptoms.
