Why does repetitive strain injury cause forearm pain?

Short answer
Repetitive strain injury causes forearm pain when repeated loading irritates muscles and tendons faster than the tissues can recover.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Regular movement breaks and varied positions
How repeated use affects the forearm
The forearm contains muscles and tendons that control the wrist, hand and fingers. Repeated gripping, typing, lifting, tool use or sustained awkward wrist positions can keep these tissues under load. Irritation may develop where a tendon glides, where a muscle joins a tendon, or around the elbow and wrist. Pain can feel aching, burning or sharp and may increase during the task or afterwards. Forearm Pain is a common presentation of Repetitive Strain Injury. Numbness, tingling, marked weakness or neck pain may suggest nerve involvement or another cause rather than a simple overuse problem.
Reducing the strain
Identify the activity that triggers symptoms and reduce its duration, force or frequency where possible. Take brief movement breaks, change hand position and keep the wrist in a comfortable neutral alignment. Gentle motion is usually preferable to forcing a painful stretch. Cold or warmth may feel soothing for some people. A physiotherapist can assess technique, workstation or tool setup and build a graded return plan. Do not push through steadily worsening pain or weakness.
When to get help
Arrange an assessment if pain persists despite changing the provoking activity, keeps returning, or affects sleep, work or grip. Seek prompt care after an injury with sudden weakness, visible deformity or severe swelling. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for spreading redness, fever, loss of sensation or a hand that becomes unusually cold or pale.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which tissue may be involved, whether nerve or neck symptoms need checking, what activity changes are realistic, and how to progress strengthening without provoking a flare.

Questions people ask
Does repetitive strain injury affect only people who use computers?
No. Any repeated gripping, lifting, tool use or sustained posture can overload forearm tissues.
When might forearm pain need a different assessment?
Numbness, tingling, marked weakness, neck pain or sudden injury can point to nerve, joint or other problems.
