Why does psoriasis cause scaly skin?

Scaly Skin is a very common presentation of Psoriasis. Most people with Psoriasis notice dry, layered scale over an inflamed patch, though the appearance varies with skin tone and location. The scale is made from skin cells reaching the surface too quickly and accumulating in visible layers. It may feel rough, tight, itchy, or tender. Scraping it off can expose delicate skin and cause bleeding, which may worsen irritation and prolong the flare. Scalp psoriasis can look like stubborn flakes, while plaques on elbows or knees may become thicker from repeated friction.

Soften scale with a bland moisturiser or the product recommended for you, then wash gently without forceful rubbing. Short, warm showers can be less drying than long hot baths. Keep fingernails short and avoid lifting attached scale. A healthcare professional may recommend a scale-softening ingredient or anti-inflammatory treatment, depending on the site and thickness. Follow directions carefully, especially on thin skin such as the face or skin folds, where some treatments need extra caution.

Seek medical advice if scale is rapidly spreading, painful, cracked, bleeding, or preventing normal activity. Prompt assessment is needed for pus, fever, increasing warmth, or marked tenderness. Urgent care is appropriate if widespread peeling or redness comes with dizziness, weakness, or feeling acutely unwell. These features can reflect a severe flare, irritation, or infection and should not be managed by scraping the skin.
