Why does psoriasis cause peeling skin?

Peeling Skin is a common presentation of Psoriasis. In an affected patch, skin cells move toward the surface faster than usual and do not mature in the usual way. Layers collect, forming a raised or rough plaque; the outer material then flakes or peels away. Removing scale can expose tender skin and cause bleeding, so the appearance should be considered alongside redness, thickness, location and symptoms rather than treated as a diagnosis by itself.

Soften flakes with a fragrance-free emollient and wash gently with lukewarm water. Let loose scale come away without scraping, picking or using rough exfoliating tools. Keep nails short if peeling is itchy, and protect sensitive areas from friction. A clinician can suggest treatment that calms inflammation and reduces scale; products suitable for one body region may be inappropriate for another.

Arrange an assessment when peeling is extensive, painful, recurrent or accompanied by open areas. Seek urgent medical help for rapidly spreading redness, severe tenderness, fever, pus, marked swelling or peeling across much of the body. Those features need evaluation rather than home scale removal.
