Why does psoriasis cause itchy skin?

Itchy Skin is a common presentation of Psoriasis. Immune activity in a plaque can release signals that stimulate nerves near the surface. Dry scale and tiny splits then add friction, so clothing, sweat or a scratch may intensify the sensation. Scratching can damage the outer layer and maintain an itch–scratch cycle. The strength of itching does not reliably show how extensive the psoriasis is.

Apply a bland moisturizer regularly, keep nails short and use a cool compress for a brief period when the urge to scratch rises. Wash with lukewarm water and avoid fragranced products that sting. Covering a plaque with soft clothing may reduce rubbing. A dermatologist may recommend treatment aimed at inflammation, scale or itch depending on the site and your other medicines.

Get medical advice when itching is new, severe, widespread or disrupting sleep, or when scratching causes open skin. Prompt assessment is appropriate for warmth, swelling, pus, fever, facial swelling or breathing symptoms, since these may reflect infection or a reaction rather than ordinary plaque itch.

Ask what is driving your itch, whether any current product is irritating the skin, and how to combine moisturizer with prescribed treatment. Tell your doctor where the itch occurs and whether it is worse at night or after bathing.
