Why does prostate cancer cause difficulty passing urine?

The urethra runs through the prostate, so swelling, enlargement, or a mass in this area can obstruct the route from the bladder. Symptoms can include waiting before urine starts, a weak stream, straining, stopping and starting, dribbling, or a sense that the bladder has not emptied. Difficulty Passing Urine is a very common presentation of Prostate Cancer. However, the same symptoms can also arise from non-cancerous prostate enlargement, infection, medicines, nerve problems, or narrowing of the urethra.

Book a medical review when a change in urine flow persists, worsens, or disrupts sleep and daily activity. The clinician may check the abdomen and prostate, test a urine sample, review medicines, and decide whether blood tests, imaging, or specialist assessment are appropriate. Record the pattern of your symptoms, including poor flow, urgency, nighttime waking, pain, and whether you are still able to empty your bladder.

Get urgent care if you are unable to pass urine, have increasing lower abdominal swelling or pain, develop fever and chills, or feel very unwell. Complete urinary retention can overstretch the bladder and may need prompt drainage. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for blood clots in urine or severe back pain with urinary symptoms.
