Why does sweaty feet cause excessive sweating?

Plantar hyperhidrosis involves sweat glands in the soles responding excessively to nerve signals. Warmth, stress, activity, and enclosed footwear may amplify wetness, but sweating can also occur when the body does not need to cool itself. Damp skin can soften, rub, and become more vulnerable to odour or infection between the toes.

The pattern may be isolated to the feet or occur alongside sweating of the palms or underarms. A clinician will consider when it began, whether it occurs during sleep, and whether medicines or another health problem could be contributing.

Dry the feet carefully, especially between the toes, and change socks when they become damp. Choose breathable footwear, alternate pairs, and allow shoes to dry fully. A clinician or pharmacist may recommend an antiperspirant containing an aluminium salt for the soles; follow directions because irritation can occur. Persistent symptoms may respond to other clinician-guided treatments.

Book an assessment if sweating begins suddenly, happens throughout the body, occurs during sleep, or comes with weight change, palpitations, fever, dizziness, or weakness. Seek prompt care for cracked skin with spreading redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, or severe pain. Diabetes or reduced foot sensation also warrants tailored foot advice.
