Why does pityriasis rosea cause skin rash?

A larger scaly patch may appear first, followed days or weeks later by smaller oval patches on the trunk or along the limbs. The smaller lesions can follow skin lines, creating a branching or fir-tree-like arrangement. The rash may itch, especially with heat, sweating, or friction. Its exact trigger is not always clear, and the appearance can overlap with other rashes.

Pityriasis rosea is not caused by poor hygiene. A clinician may use the timing, scale, distribution, and any recent symptoms to decide whether the pattern fits. A rash that looks different or continues to change needs an individual assessment.

Keep showers lukewarm, use a mild fragrance-free cleanser, and apply a plain moisturiser after washing. Loose clothing can reduce rubbing, while avoiding overheating may lessen itch. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on an anti-itch product suited to your age, pregnancy status, and other medicines. Do not peel the scale or use strong steroid products without guidance.

Arrange a review if the rash is painful, blistering, infected-looking, associated with fever or feeling very unwell, or affecting the eyes, mouth, or genital skin. Seek advice for a rash during pregnancy, for a child with an uncertain diagnosis, or when it does not follow the expected pattern or keeps worsening.
