Why does sun-damaged skin cause fine lines?

Fine Lines is a very common presentation of Sun-Damaged Skin. Ultraviolet radiation reaches the skin’s support layers and alters collagen fibres, which normally help resist folding. It also reduces the spring provided by elastin, so skin may not return as readily after expressions such as squinting or smiling. A damaged barrier allows more water loss, making small creases look deeper when the surface is dry. Repeated movement then reinforces lines in areas such as the forehead, around the eyes, and around the mouth. Natural ageing and facial expression contribute as well, so fine lines can appear on protected skin too.

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen every day to exposed skin and add sunglasses, a hat, or shade when outdoors. Moisturise regularly to reduce dryness and improve the feel of the surface. Avoid smoking and harsh cleansing, both of which can aggravate skin ageing and irritation. Start one active product at a time, use it as directed, and pause if burning, swelling, or persistent peeling develops.

Fine lines alone are usually a cosmetic concern, but seek assessment for a line or patch that becomes scaly, crusted, painful, itchy, or prone to bleeding. A new mark that changes in colour, shape, or size, or a sore that does not heal, should be checked, particularly on sun-exposed skin.
