Short answer

Sun-damaged skin can cause crepey skin by breaking down collagen and elastin, thinning support around skin cells, and reducing the skin’s ability to hold moisture.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is happening in the skin

Crepey Skin is a very common presentation of Sun-Damaged Skin. Repeated ultraviolet exposure affects the dermis, the deeper layer that gives skin much of its strength and spring. As collagen fibres become less organised and elastin loses flexibility, the surface has less structural support. Sun exposure can also impair the skin barrier, so water escapes more readily and fine surface folds look sharper. The effect is often easiest to see on the eyelids, neck, chest, upper arms, and hands, where skin may already be relatively thin. Natural ageing, dry air, smoking, weight changes, and repeated movement can add to the texture, so crepey skin can have several contributors.

Ways to care for crepey texture

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed areas and reapply as directed on the product label, especially during outdoor activities. Covering the skin with clothing, a hat, or shade adds another layer of protection. Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser after washing to support the barrier; ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid can help the surface feel more hydrated. Avoid harsh scrubs and very hot water, which can increase dryness. A dermatologist can discuss prescription retinoids or procedures that stimulate remodelling, taking into account your skin type, irritation history, and the body area being treated.

When to seek medical advice

Arrange a skin assessment if a thin or wrinkled patch changes quickly, becomes scaly, crusted, tender, itchy, or bleeds, or if it does not heal. Those features need a clinician’s examination because sun-exposed skin can develop conditions that require different treatment. Seek prompt advice for a new spot with changing colour, shape, or border. A clinician can also help when widespread dryness, cracking, or irritation continues despite gentle moisturising.

Questions for your doctor

Could ultraviolet exposure, dryness, or another skin condition be contributing to this texture? Which moisturiser and sunscreen fit my skin? Would a retinoid or in-clinic treatment be appropriate for the area, and what irritation or recovery should I expect?

Questions people ask

Can moisturiser improve crepey skin?

Moisturiser can soften the feel and appearance of surface dryness, but it cannot replace lost structural support.

Does crepey skin always come from sun exposure?

No. Ageing, dryness, smoking, weight changes, and repeated movement may also influence crepey texture.
