Why does perioral dermatitis cause sensitive skin?

Perioral dermatitis causes inflammation in a concentrated area of the face. That inflammation can disturb the outer barrier, allowing moisture to escape more easily and making the skin’s nerve endings respond to products, water, wind, or friction. Redness, tightness, stinging, scaling, and small bumps may appear together. Sensitive Skin is a common presentation of Perioral Dermatitis. Sensitivity can linger while the rash settles, even when the bumps look less noticeable.

Keep the routine simple: cleanse gently with lukewarm water, avoid scrubbing, and pause fragranced or active products that sting. Apply only products your clinician recommends for the affected area. Avoid picking or rubbing, and protect the face from wind and strong sun. A dermatologist can identify triggers and prescribe treatment while helping you maintain the skin barrier.

Arrange a review if burning is persistent, the rash spreads around the eyes, or ordinary skincare becomes difficult to tolerate. Seek urgent help for eye pain, vision changes, rapid swelling, or breathing difficulty. Tell the clinician about recent steroid creams, cosmetics, toothpaste, and new medicines.
