Why does pelvic inflammatory disease cause vaginal discharge?

Vaginal Discharge is a common presentation of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. Discharge may be heavier than usual, change in colour or smell, or occur with lower abdominal pain, pain during sex, bleeding between periods, or discomfort when passing urine. These features can overlap with other vaginal or cervical infections, so discharge alone cannot identify the cause.

Pelvic inflammatory disease can involve more than the vagina. The infection may affect the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, or nearby pelvic tissues, which is why pelvic pain or fever can accompany a change in discharge.

Arrange a prompt medical assessment if new or unusual discharge occurs with pelvic pain, fever, bleeding, or pain during sex. A clinician may ask about symptoms, examine the pelvis, and offer tests for infections. If pelvic inflammatory disease is diagnosed, take the prescribed treatment exactly as directed and complete the course even if symptoms improve.

Avoid sex until a clinician advises that it is safe, particularly while treatment is underway. Recent or current partners may also need assessment, depending on the infection involved. Do not douche or use scented products to mask the discharge, because these can irritate sensitive tissue.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening pelvic pain, faintness, vomiting, a high temperature with feeling very unwell, or possible pregnancy with pelvic pain or bleeding. Prompt care matters because untreated pelvic infection can spread and may affect fertility or cause longer-lasting pelvic pain.
