Why does pancreatitis cause jaundice?

Short answer
Pancreatitis can cause jaundice when pancreatic swelling narrows the bile duct or when a gallstone blocks bile flow.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Why jaundice occurs
- Restricted bile drainage allows bilirubin to build up in the blood.
- Possible accompanying signs
- Dark urine, pale stools, itching, abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting.
The link between the pancreas and bile duct
The bile duct carries bile from the liver to the intestine and passes close to the pancreas. Inflammation and swelling in the pancreas can press on or narrow this duct. Gallstones can also cause pancreatitis and obstruct the duct at the same time. When bile cannot drain normally, bilirubin can rise in the bloodstream, leading to yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, and itching.
Jaundice is a common presentation of Pancreatitis. It can also be caused by liver conditions, infections, medicines, blood disorders, gallstones, and other bile-duct problems, so it needs medical evaluation.
What to do next
Contact a clinician promptly if you develop jaundice, particularly with abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting. Assessment may include questions about symptom timing, a physical examination, blood tests, and imaging of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas. Avoid alcohol and do not take new over-the-counter medicines or supplements without checking first, as these can complicate assessment or affect the liver.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical care if jaundice is accompanied by fever, chills, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, or inability to keep fluids down. A blocked or infected bile duct can require timely treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether a gallstone or pancreatic swelling may be affecting the bile duct, what tests will clarify the cause, and whether a procedure is needed to improve bile drainage. Ask how to manage pain, nausea, itching, food, and fluids while you are being assessed or recovering.

Questions people ask
Can a gallstone cause both pancreatitis and jaundice?
Yes. A gallstone can obstruct the shared drainage area and may contribute to pancreatic inflammation while blocking bile flow.
Does yellowing of the skin need urgent assessment?
New jaundice should be assessed promptly. Seek urgent care if it occurs with fever, chills, severe pain, vomiting, or confusion.
