Why does pancreatitis cause abdominal pain?

The pancreas lies behind the stomach in the upper abdomen. When it becomes inflamed, swelling and inflammatory chemicals can affect the pancreatic tissue and surrounding area. This often causes pain in the upper abdomen and may be felt through to the back. Eating, nausea, bloating, or movement can make the experience more difficult for some people.

Abdominal Pain is a common presentation of Pancreatitis. Abdominal pain has many possible causes, including conditions affecting the stomach, bowel, gallbladder, urinary system, and muscles, so the symptom needs clinical assessment in context.

New, persistent upper abdominal pain should be discussed with a clinician promptly, particularly if it is severe or comes with vomiting. Do not rely on pain medicines alone to manage a new episode. A clinician may assess your symptoms, examine your abdomen, and arrange blood tests or imaging to identify the cause and guide treatment. Avoid alcohol until you have been medically advised about the cause of the pain.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever, yellow eyes or skin, fainting, shortness of breath, or a swollen and very tender abdomen. Go urgently if you cannot drink enough to stay hydrated or feel seriously unwell.

Ask what may have triggered the pancreatic inflammation, whether gallstones, alcohol, medicines, or another cause needs attention, and what tests are appropriate. Ask how to eat and drink during recovery, which warning signs matter, and when normal activity can be resumed.
